Follow-up Comment #9:

In general, Octave validates its inputs more strictly than Matlab to prevent
Garbage In / Garbage Out.  In this case, I think it is useful for the
programmer to be made aware that the input was not a character string as was
likely expected.  But it was good to point out the discrepancy so that others
may happen on this issue report.
