Follow-up Comment #1:

Support for transparency is very preliminary in Octave graphics. You might
have noticed that the faces aren't correctly sorted from back to front or that
the grid from the rear of the object isn't visible at all.

Nevertheless, I'll try and see whether we can do better (still not good) in
this particular case.
