Follow-up Comment #13, bug #47480 (project octave):

Just one more thing:
How can one find out if Octave was built with Java support? I'm asking because
there's also a diagnostic function in io (chk_spreadsheet_support.m) that
checks for several problems and/or potential problems with spreadsheet I/O.
One of its steps is checking whether Octave has built-in Java support; if yes,
it next checks for a working JRE.
usejava.m is no alternative because it combines these two steps into one.
