Follow-up Comment #26, bug #42136 (project octave): @apjanke if you're looking at qterminal stuff, take a look at this too. Basically instead of using fonts, it intercepts certain "box drawing characters" and draw one-pixel lines intead. This already looks bad but its also missing diagonal lines.
