Follow-up Comment #5, bug #57198 (project octave):

Maybe related:
I have a dual monitor setup, the GUI editor is usually on the right screen,
with a tiny bit of the left edge on the left screen (to be able to grab it
when the right screen is lacking, i.e., when switching to working remotely).
Until a while ago, when I closed the undocked editor using the Close button,
the next time I opened the editor it would appear exactly at the previous
location.
But recently it appears in the top left corner of my main (left) screen and at
a small size (lines maybe 40 chars wide, height maybe 20 lines).
Apparently when closing the editor the position is reset to a default undocked
position, rather than saved somewhere for the next time it is opened.

This reminds me of an old bug some years ago with the editor on dual screens
and/or high-res monitors.
