I looked at the configure script, and it is total gibberish to me.

It doesn't seem to make any difference what I set TEMP to -- it always uses
c:\Octave\Temp, which is OK AFAIK.

I can't tell what commands the pkg function is running, except for mkdir and
untar, which work. Error traceback sources "configure_make" and "install"
can't be found anywhere in the Octave path.
Since I will be moving to a different computer in a few months, I will give up
on this process and hope it goes more smoothly on a different machine (one
where I am admin). Thanks to all for your help.
