(sorry for a late response, had to scan all PCs here after our provider
limited internet access upon detecting "Clop" ransomware traffic from my
daughters Macbook)

The most prominent difference is really after backing out JWE's changeset
(comment #7, 262cdfc6faf9) and then running  __run_test_suite__ . 
That indicates that it isn't quite canonicalize_file_name that is affected, it
seems many many more functions show a slowdown.
It's intriguing that it is mostly Windows that is affected - that is, I had no
chance yet to compare the effects of that cset on Linux.
