Details:

When I run the attached file, I am supposed to add a few Greek letters as part
of the axis labels. The figure is prepared correctly, but rendered improperly
when I export it as .png. There is significant white space between "(" and
"\alpha".

The problem seems to improve if the length of the label string is short (ex:
xlabel('a (\alpha \beta)') works).

I attached a simplified script and its output.
