Harold Gutch, I confirmed that your patch indeed fixes this bug, thank you
very much for the problem analysis.

Thank you for pushing Rik.  The OP says in comment #0 that this issue seems to
occur when using `pkg build`, thus a widely used feature by all package
maintainers.  Therefore I grafted it back to stable to have it fixed as early
as possible.
