Follow-up Comment #8, bug #59273 (project octave):
Thanks, so the Debian testsuite does about the same as test-spsh.m - (for
those unfamiliar with io package innards:) the latter finds supported
interfaces and tests them one by one.
Anyway, see also bug #59277.
