Oh, I see.

Yes, I agree, just use binary mode.  Should we then also do our on writing of
system-specific LF/CR/CRLF line endings or just always write LF?  I suppose it
would be best to just write LF?

If only I had been more open to just using a binary format for Octave files
way back when...
