Follow-up Comment #33, bug #53513 (project octave):
How about adding an updater to the "beingdeleted" property of uicontextmenu
objects and doing the cleanup there (see attached patch)? I think this one is
safe to push to stable.
As for the second patch, it should definitely *not* go to stable: after
testing a bit more I can see that it uncovers many scary warnings about
invalid objects (testing bug #48186) ... Some more work is needed.
