And next iteration to also match the prefix at the beginning of the variable:

if test -n "$prefix"; then echo "$var" | sed -E "s%(-[LI]|[
,]|^)${prefix}([/\\ ]|$)%\1\$\{prefix\}\2%g"; else echo "$var"; fi
