Thanks very much, I'll give it try asap.
After crossbuilding I have to conquer a few security hoops to get it to work
to test it (as that's where I hit it). Hopefully I can try it tomorrow. At
home it's easy enough to connect some PC's to get network paths but at work
the NTFS file system has some "specials", if it works there I suppose it'll
work everywhere.

I figured it had to be something with the way edit() interprets paths, but I'm
not so at home in Octave's internals. Reading your patches I infer it isn't
the GUI editor per sé that was affected, right?

BTW we don't have nightly builds for dev Octave, let alone incl. packages, do
we? At octave.space I only see 6.3.1 builds.
