Follow-up Comment #12, bug #61080 (project octave):

@Philip: You are right. It wasn't the GUI editor per se but how we were
looking for files in the load path that caused the problem for your use case.

The most important change that should make your original issue work for you is
just a change in a .m file. While it would be nice to see if the fix for
`file_in_path` works in your environment, you could just make the change in
`edit.m` to be able to open files on UNC shares in the load path in the editor
from the prompt (see comment #7).
