Follow-up Comment #25, bug #61199 (project octave):

Some of my response was cut off.  If someone receives it in e-mail it would be
nice to re-post the entire response to this bug report.

In order to stay compatible with Matlab I think we have to return doubles. 
However, we could switch to the the algorithm that gives more exact results
when the return value is close to flintmax.
