Follow-up Comment #8, bug #61753 (project octave):

That's fine with me.  Of course, I used to code a lot of Perl so I'm very
familiar with the two constructs


STATEMENT if (condition);
STATEMENT unless (condition);


I agree that it would make transitioning the existing instances of assert
either.
