Follow-up Comment #2:

Please try with attached shaperead.m and report back.
I've added some remarks to the Texinfo header and used setdiff() to weed out
.shp file attributes from the user-specified attributes list.

Interestingly, it'll probably work fine with the original shaperead.m if you
specify the non-.shp file attributes first in the requested-attributes list.
There's definitely something fishy in dbfread.m.
