Hello,

Here is a proposal for a fix. I followed the option proposed by @mleitner,
which seemed to me the most suitable.

Since the `typ` variable was no longer useful, I also revised and simplified
the type test for `x` and `y`. This is not quite equivalent to what was done
before for the `char` and `logical` types. If one wants to preserve the
possibility of giving two `char` or two `logical` as input, a little extra
work is needed.
