Follow-up Comment #22:

Imho, the version from comment #18 is fine. If someone would like to tackle
this in C++, this can be done in follow-up changes.
But we should probably add test cases to avoid regressing if/when this is
done.

Could you please add some BISTs? Preferably ones that are failing with the
current implementation, but are fixed with the changes in your patch from
comment #18.
