Hmm, so that function doesn't do anything that could obviously cause trouble. 
But, moving on, try the attached change?

But separately, by running the test suite with the address sanitizer, I found
and fixed a possible buffer overflow issue here:

So could you also please update to the latest revision on the stable branch
and try that without any patches?
