Follow-up Comment #12, bug #63646 (project octave):

Attaching an updated patch with a commit message etc. In addition to the
changes from comment #10, I used an initializer to eliminate the first loop,
and reduced the indent level in a few places by using `continue`, and added a
commit message.

Since this is going to stable, I didn't push it directly. More review can't
hurt. Patch attached.
