Follow-up Comment #1, bug #63803 (project octave):

Separate issues - (1) why the crash, (2) why losing previously saved data

In the editor, we had a similar problem. A crash diluting save away wiping
previously saved data.  fixed by writing to a temp file and only overwriting
after a successful and verified write. It was fairly straightforward in the qt
gui. Not sure if something similar can be done for writing mat files
