Follow-up Comment #22, bug #63931 (project octave):

Quite a high-achieving bug. I can see how encoding problems cause the wrong
value to be written to file... not at all intuitive in diagnosis but makes
sense in retrospect. But I currently have no idea why that causes the wrong
number of bytes to be written to file, that too for numeric values that aren't
even char.
