I've fixed a few bugs since I made the tar file (last commit was ~30
minutes ago now).
But there is another reason to build from the tar file. It's possible
that there are bugs in the dist targets in the makefiles, or that some
files are not included properly. Some problems like that have already
been noticed and (I think) fixed.
