Hmm.  But, if there are several plots within the figure this
does not seem to work.  I am no too sure how the subplots
and their axes are represented within the figure object.
Anyhow, at least for me, when there are subplots in the
figure, the grid button does not work.

I will think about possible candidates for additional buttons.
