Dear HTH,

Thanks for your reply, I upgraded from 4.4.1 to 5.1 and now the popup is gone and I can use the help within the GUI.

But reverting back to 4.4.1 pb is still present. mI suspect some file permission changed but can't find it.

Thank you

then nothing in the Documentation tab
running Octave 4.4.1 on ubuntu 19.10

Can you please help

Hi,

Can you display the Octave help via

   assistant -collectionFile /usr/share/octave/4.4.1/doc/octave_interpreter.qch

or do you face errors?  There was a similar bug [1] solved for Octave 5.1.0, when the help files are stored at some read-only location and indices cannot be written.

HTH,
Kai

Please, can you keep the mailing list in the CC, so others may benefit from our "discoveries" and answer at the bottom of the email (bottom posting [2]) to make it easier to follow the message thread.

This is good to hear, that in 5.1.0 this is no longer an issue.  Do you use the Octave versions from the official Ubuntu repositories, or did you choose another installation method for Octave?
Do you rely on 4.4.1 for some reason or your version 5.1.0 a satisfying solution to this issue?

Best,
Kai
