Upon investigation, I didn't have a TeX package installed (although I
thought I did). So, using the fink command (similar to yum install package)
I installed the following two TeX packages for the Mac:
fink install tetex-texmf
fink install tetex-base
(More info on the variety of TeX packages available for the Mac can be found
at http://www.esm.psu.edu/mac-tex )
After a compile of about 1 and half hours, I've gotten a workable TeX
package, and did the make distclean again. This time, I got two fails out
of the 63 tests:
Fail 1:
1c1
< . /2.00E+00/0000000003/4010000000000000/

Fail 2:
installation error: Cannot find output initialization file. Use `-vv' to
view search path.
warning: No output drivers are active.
fatal: Error initializing output drivers.
run data

FAIL: bugs/html-frequency.sh
I think the second fail is understandable. Any comments on the first fail?
BTW, I hope this is helpful. I'm trying to approach this as from a casual
Mac user who has a basic system and would be interested in using an SPSS
type package for statistics. They pretty much know about getting a package,
installing it, and using it. The TeX component is the first thing that's
given me pause, in that's it's a very big package. Some people may balk at
having to install this just to be able to get output. Just my two cents...

This would seem to suggest that you do not have TeX installed.
Do you?
