Hmm, I did both of the following

echo /usr/share/aclocal >>
/usr/local/john/src/p/host_tools/share/aclocal/dirlist
echo /usr/share/aclocal >>
/usr/local/john/src/p/host_tools/share/aclocal-1.10/dirlist

but it didn't seem to help.

BTW, "aclocal --print-ac-dir" now gives
/usr/local/john/src/p/host_tools/share/aclocal

and the directory listing is:
