You are correct again (of course!)

I have produced a second version of my demo :

It uses a GtkTreeModel for its data and shows some bells and whistles too.  And 
it is still O(1)!!

I'm still not convinced by the headers-in-row-zero idea.  But perhaps I'll come 
round to it ...
