I've exactly the same behaviour here, but didn't yet have the time
to debug it.

ratpoison-1.4.2 on OpenBSD-current, and the problem occured after
we switched to X.Org Server 1.4. (currently 1.4.0.90, to be correct).
At least the bug seems to be OS-independent.
