FWIW, I've got a similar problem, only ratpoison doesn't crash but
"hangs" -- X starts consuming 99% CPU. If I manage to ssh to this PC
and kill X, then I can restart X and everything is working again. And
it happens after I press RET for any command I type in the C-t : or
C-t ! prompts.

I am on up-to-date Debian unstable, tried it on desktop PC and IBM
Thinkpad R51, same thing. Ratpoison version 1.4.2-1. Had to revert
back to 1.4.0.dfsg-7 on Debian stable, to get my prompts back. My
xorg is:
