Hi,

The CoopX group was created this week. Its goal is to define an
exchange format to allow easy migration of projects between hosting
platforms (Savannah and SourceForge, for instance ;-).

This group was purposedly created on a neutral ground, not related to
Free Software or non free software in order to allow every software
maker or hosting platform to join it. The group is run as an anarchy
(everyone on equal footage), the exchange format will be released under
a licence such as GPL or FDL, it was not decided yet.

It is at a very early stage. It currently involves GNU (Savannah),
VA Linux (SourceForge), phpgroupware, tuxfamily (tuxfamily.org), GET
(ENST, ENST Bretagne, INT Evry with serveur-libre.enst.fr), puresource
(puresource.org). The lead of each project is involved.

Discussions are archived at:

http://coopx.eu.org/pipermail/coopx/2001-June/thread.html

I see this as a very important project to ensure the independance of
Free Software. Too many software development groups are too tightly
bound to their hosting facility and cannot easily be mirrored or
migrated from one to another. They should be able to do it for
philosophical or practical reasons.

Cheers,
