Description:
  In participating in online independant media projects, I have found there to 
be critical flaws caused by reliance upon unix/linux software which will 
hamstring the growth and prosperity of the independent media movement 
worldwide. Therefore, it is necessary to immediately start the process to 
create software using the GNU Hurd OS. This software would be capable of 
transmitting text, pictures, and audio/video feeds gathered by independent 
media providers to an audience. It would not require the organizational 
hierarchies currently required in the current models in order for media 
providers to distribute their content to their audience. It would be designed 
with delivery of news and public affairs content in mind. This software would 
take advantage of the ability for the Mach Kernel to process many more types of 
files without compromising security of the server kernel. This would allow for 
semi-autonomous nodes of the software to allow independent news gatherers to 
add and edit media content from distant locations on the server without the 
need of a root pasword. This would allow for nodes to operate in many different 
cities. For a truly free media server to deliver content to an audience, 
structural hierarchies must be kept to an absolute minimum so that the 
maintainers of media network nodes do not have the abilty to have an undue 
influence upon the content a node is capable of delivering. Current software 
has created difficulties when an individual given charge of a locality has 
decided to use that position to filter the content of the media contained in 
their locality according to their philosophical preferences. FreeMedia server 
software would notify the main server if content was moved to a storage area 
not publically accessable and flag the content to allow those operating the 
main server to decide if it was inappropriate or objectionable in some way. In 
this way, the operators of the network could prevent a node supervisor from 
removing content just because of the philosophy it promoted or stand it took on 
an issue. Therefore, the primary reasons for the necessity for this software is 
the greater  latitude The Hurd offers in manipulating various types of media 
files remotely as well the ability of those in charge of the operation of the 
server software to ensure it\'s mission of allowing any audience member access 
to the work of any contributor is maintained through a network of remote nodes 
in distant cities is fulfilled.
