gnu.org has a public ftp archive - i was looking at doing some work in
improving some of the systems in place for it and documenting some
existing systems.  part of that involved being able to update web
pages relating to mirrors, how to mirror and so on.

yes, for some reason i've managed to get confused between the www.gnu.org
systems and the savannah ones.  sorry 'bout that.
