    A lot of my responses would be theories, but they all contain: broken bits 
in 
    the database, not enough error recovery in the backend scripts, and bugs 
that 
    have crept in over the last ~6 months.

It might be a good idea to design the scripts with an explicit
error-catcher that can undo, in case of error, whatever steps
have so far been done.
