| I apologize for the confusion. I wasn't expecting a questionaire so I
| pulled
| it out of my... hat. I intend to release Free-Enterprise as a Free
| Software
| project, using the GPL license (long live rms).
| When I said "open-source" I did not mean "Open Source(TM)". I will
| endeavor
| to avoid that confusion in the future.
| I may release a couple of libraries under the LGPL so that people who
| wish to
| move from existing systems will be able to develop export filters etc.
| more
| easily. However, the bulk of the system, especially those parts that do
| the
| real work, will be sweet, sweet, GPL.
|>Also, will your software work witha a free SQL engine/server like
|>MySQL or PostgreSQL?
| Absolutely. My SQL server of choice is PostgreSQL, however I will resist
| the temptation to use PostgreSQL specific features.

| I am still in the research phase. Because of the interconnectedness of
| many
| business functions and data I need to give careful consideration to the
| structure of the system. I have chosen to wait until I have a solid set
| of
| documentation to work from before I begin implementation.
| Although I designed a business management system for my last employer
| (no, I
| did not sign a non-disclosure/non-compete with them), it was very
| specific to
| that business. In order to be flexible enough for any type of business I
| will
| need to come up with a drastically different design.
| Although I have not written any code yet, I am confident that I can
| complete
| this project. I have been writing software since 1992 (mbasic-80 under
| CP/M on
| a Kaypro II) and have worked with a variety of languages (Intel and VAX
| assembly, BASIC, C/C++, Pascal, PHP, blah, blah, blah).
| I currently have 4490 lines (2530 without white space) of notes in
| sloppily
| written XML. This is essentially an outline. I expect to double or
| triple this
| before I begin actual coding, and quadruple it into documentation before
| the project reaches v.1.0.
| I may begin coding the inventory module in November as a test-bed for my
| design ideas, but given the amount of research I still need to do, I
| cannot
| commit to a firm timeline at the moment.
| I will send you a copy of my notes after I have tidied things up a
| little and
| finished updating the bibliography. You can expect it by the end of this
| week.

| I appreciate your concern on this issue. I will send some code for
| review as
| soon as I have some :)
| In the meantime, I can add the GPL disclaimer to my notes, as I wish to
| assure
| you of my comittment to keep this code free.
| I will be out of town for my sister's wedding from Oct. 20-30, so
| don't be too surprised if I'm out of contact for a little while.
| Please let me know about any questions, concerns, or suggestions you may
| have.
| Sincerly,
| Ian P. Bangs
