Follow-up Comment #2, sr #110626 (project administration):

Ah, there does appear to be what savannah considers a syntax error in the
second paragraph: the inline use of "verbatim" tags. 
http://savannah.gnu.org/markup-test.php says "The starting and ending verbatim
marks take whole lines; the rest text that may be on the same lines is
ignored."  Probably what you wanted here was the "nomarkup" tag: "Unlike the
verbatim tag, it produces no text block and can be used within a line."

That doesn't explain all the _following_ lines also being ignored, though. 
That still feels like a buggy rendering to me, and is certainly not implied by
the markup documentation cited above.
