Phonetic Spelling with Speechd-el

Is there any way to spell a character or word phonetically with
speechd-el?  While in emacs, I've beginning to use speechd-el quite a
bit now but I find myself needing to cheat with speakup some to spell
or pronounce characters phonetically and to review char by char in
messages that cannot be reviewed easily or at all with normal emacs
navigation keys.

Not bad for starters though; it was easy enough to get going and begin
using it but I feel I'm missing some key functionality like what I
just discussed here.
