Speech Dispatcher on Ubuntu 8.10 with Alsa?

Dear Santa,

For Christmas I would like a step by step guide to getting Speech-Dispatcher
working with Alsa on Ubuntu 8.10 with multi-channel sound support.

I have already been getting support from some subscribers and read all of the
guides I can find and although I can disable PulseAudio and run
Speech-Dispatcher with Alsa, as soon as Speech-Dispatcher is running I cannot
play any other sounds. I have used the recommended non-destructive method to
disable PulseAudio and confirmed it is not running, and tried configuring
Speech-Dispatcher as both a user and a service, and even with PulseAudio, but
I can never get any other audio app to play once Speech-Dispatcher is
started. I have spent over a week trying to resolve this now, god knows how
anyone managed this with only a screen-reader as often there is no audio
output during certain stages of the process.

Please donate your knowledge generously to save me from another weekend of
frustration and anxiety!!! :(
