[orca-list] question about speech-dispatcher and speakup in maverick

I'm running speakup with voxin in Ubuntu/Maverick 64-bit. You should
install Luke's new speakup package, which simplifies speakup support
(thanks, Luke!).  Just run:

$ sudo apt-get install speakup

The next steps are a bit more trouble. I strongly prefer the
Eloquence voice over espeak for it's high speed performance, so
espeakup doesn't do me much good. If espeakup is all you want, give
it a try. It might still work. What I did was hack together a
version of speechd-up that works ok for me. We're expecting a better
version based on ospeakup soon, but in the meantime, if you want my
hacked version, you can get the source with:

$ git clone gitosis at git.vinux-project.org:speechd-up.git

To get voxin working in 64-bit, I had to compile it with
speech-dispatcher on a 32-bit virtual machine, and then copy sd_ibmtts
to my 64-bit mahine, along with a couple .so files it needs. The
system mostly works, but it refuses to talk until I log in using GDM,
even though I have a system-wide version of speech-dispatcher running.
