The predefined symolic voice names were meant as a sort of abstraction.  The 
idea was
that the user would be able to map them to available voices without requiring 
the ATs to
deal with that.  I am not sure how much that concept got adopted, but I believe 
that at
least speechd-el uses it.  Could, please, Milan say, whether it proved to be 
practical
or not?  Otherwise I would not be strictly against removing it in favor of 
direct
synthesis voice manipulation, since it really seems to be more practical.  The 
only my
concern would be compatibility.
