hi there, i used synaptic on fedora 8 but it does not work at all. when it starts, says that 2 packages are broken and when i tell him to fix those packages, it wants to remove 4 packages related to perl-bioperl. But while trying to remove them, it hangs and even after 5 minutes, it doesn't resume and i must kill it. And after these, neither rpm nor yum will not work until restart. Also when i click on preferences on the application, it crashes and will be closed.
This is a combination of various silly bugs... Synaptic crashing will leave stale rpmdb lock behind, causing all future operations to hang indefinetely.
Exit all rpm-related processes and do 'rm -f /var/lib/rpm/__*' as root (a reboot will accomplish the same thing). Additionally you'll need to pull in some updates:
- the initial repository config is buggy, you'll need to update it first: # yum update fedora-package-config-apt - opening up preferences crashing Synaptic is actually a bug in the Fedora 8 apt, an update will be pushed shortly, see https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=389361BTW I recommend you report issues with Synaptic on Fedora to bugzilla, I don't watch this list very actively these days...
