@commands like @emph, @asis... do not change anything compared with
text. A period after a lower-case letter leads to double spacing,
after an upper case letter simple spacing.
Shouldn't @footnote follow this rule too? I don't see any obvious
reason why it should be treated differently than other non-code
commands. Indeed, I think a footnote on someone's initial is actually
more plausible than using @emph or the like on an initial ... not that
