I fully agree.  I am only concerned with "first level lexical" spaces,
ie, actually occurring in the sources.

Custvar sounds good, but for its name, how about:
IGNORE_SPACE_AFTER_COMMAND_NAME

Since 1) that is what TeX is doing, and
2) there are bare braces in @defun and space-handling there shouldn't be
affected.  Ok?
