Dear Norbert,
I just comitted a version with a user preference for displaying table grids.
Unfortunately, there are still problems for non trivial spans.
More annoyingly, the grid overrides existing borders.
As long as we don't have alpha-transparency this is quite irritating,
so I did not make table grids the default yet.
