Thanks for the feedback and the tsp_gdist+ suggestion, I'll take it into 
account.

Separating the machine part for endianness should be very easy (I think 
only sparc and ppc are big endian). Hmm... I recall you are setting 
Solaris i386 to big endian! In any case that type of information is 
usually provided by configure but I'm not a configure guru.
