Well, whenever I don't check something I'm punished for that :-)
Alexandre wrote that. I just repeated after him. I couldn't find anything in
standards.texi about abbreviations.
So it's probably a de-facto semi-standard. But even Automake doesn't follow it:
$ automake --h
automake: unrecognized option -- `--h'
Try `automake --help' for more information.
