Ick. Poo. And, you must mean:

since:

means just that. I actually need to globally replace
all four knarly characters: [ ] $ #
(now that I know about "Quadrigraphs" -- one step above
"trigraphs"!)
Methinks this amounts to another reason for generating
macros -- type in human readable: strchr( argv[0], ']' )
and feed M4 the: strchr( argv@<:@0@:>@, '@:>@' )
stuff.
