That is what we were going to propose as a Debian-wide fix, and it is also
what the 2.52 manual tells us to do. BUT a previous message in this thread,
stored at http://sources.redhat.com/ml/autoconf/2002-02/msg00059.html seems
to imply otherwise :(

THAT is why I am asking for a definitive statement about the future of
crossbuilding in autoconf for the foreseable future (i.e 2.52, 3.x)...
